Media Regulation (ASA)

The Advertising Standards Authority is the United Kingdom's self-regulatory organization for the advertising business. Because the ASA is not a statutory body, it cannot interpret or enforce legislation. However, in many cases, its code of advertising practice broadly mirrors regulation.

Some advertisement got banned by the ASA because they showed some inappropriate stuffs such as nudity, harassment, etc. The other reason why it got banned by the ASA is because they showed their advertisement during the Watershed time (05.30 AM to 9 PM) whereas there are so many children watching the TV. However, some advertisement that contain harassment or any inappropriate stuffs can be shown after the Watershed time. Some advertisement are being banned by the ASA in order to protect people especially under age citizens.

For example, an advertisement that promotes a deodorant got banned in the UK because it contains nudity and it shows a woman that seems to masturbate. Furthermore, the words used in the advertisement are also a bit harsh which is inappropriate for children if they see this advert.

Another example of an advert that got banned by the ASA is an advert about cigarette. This advert got banned by the ASA because it focuses too much towards the cigarettes and contain some misleading information.

At some countries such as South Korea, they are more strict regarding the content that will be shown to the public. One of the example is; South Korea boycotted a Uniqlo ad because it was considered too controversial, that's because this ad contained allusions to the Second World War which made the people of South Korea furious and flocked to make a petition to boycott this ad from their country.
