Research + Analysis

These are the research of several magazines and my analysis about the magazines.

BIG ANALYSIS - 1

Jennie from Blackpink collaborates with fashion photographer Hong Jang-hyun for the cover story of ELLE Korea's August 2021 issue. Park Min Hee was in charge of styling, with art direction by Eunji Byun. Hair stylist Lee Seon-Yeong, makeup artist Won Joyeon, and manicurist Park Eunkyung were in charge of beautification. Jennie is wearing styles from Chanel's Fall Winter 2021.22 collection, as well as Coco Crush rings, for the covers.

She represent the international beauty standard which mixed a bit with Korean beauty standard. She is also famous for her photogenic and charismatic image in front of the public. Furthermore, she is also known as one of the 'fashion icon' in K-Pop industry since she have made many fashion trend that has been followed by many other idols in the industry.

This magazine is a special edition because it has a special theme too. Previously, many Vietnamese celebrities had graced the magazine with this theme. This time, it was Jennie who was chosen to decorate this magazine with the theme "Love & Courage" with her elegant and charismatic appearance.

Media Language

The pearl jewelry worn by her shows that she is a woman of sufficient means. This is also supported by the five rings that are put on his finger. As well as the motifs of the clothes that look a little "glittery". The masthead says "ELLE" using a font that looks elegant and uses pink in accordance with the title of the magazine, namely 'Love' which is identical to the color pink.

Representations

From the point of view of social class, this magazine is quite attached to people from the upper class who have a luxurious lifestyle and have an interest in fashion that looks luxurious and elegant. there is also a side of classic luxury displayed by Kim Jennie as a model. This magazine series is quite famous on the international stage even considering that Jennie is one of the most popular girl group members in the world today who has a very large fanbase in the Asian and international markets. Jennie is considered to represent the beauty identity of Asian women who have monolid eyes and a very "Asian" face type and tan skin tone and makeup that is not too prominent. But because of the edits, her tan skin color is not too visible and makes her skin look brighter. Actually for people outside of South Korea she might be fair skinned, it's just that for Koreans who are known to have pale white skin which is also one of the Korean beauty standards, she is still considered to have slightly darker skin when compared to the KBS (Korean Beauty Standard).

Audience

The target audience from this magazine series is for those who are interested with fashion and makeup. To be specific, this magazine target audience is the young girl and more towards the star appeal who is Kim Jennie's fans or Blackpink fans that are called as Blink. This ELLE magazine series is quite interesting because they use Jennie as their star appeal. Jennie herself is known for her aura that looks cool and elegant and has a girly side in her that makes her look more attractive. besides that, Jennie herself is an ambassador for one of the most luxurious brands in the world, namely Chanel and one of the make-up brands, namely Hera Beauty. This of course will make it easier for ELLE to target their audience because they can target fashion fans of Chanel, Hera Beauty, and fans of Jennie itself. Besides that, a world-class luxury brand like Chanel definitely has a lot of fans and this can also attract these fans considering that Jennie uses a collection of Chanel accessories in her appearance in this magazine.

Industry

This magazine has clearly targeted very broad marketing by taking advantage of Jennie's popularity and getting privileges from Jennie's influence in the fashion world where she is known as one of the trendsetters. Especially with the influence of globalization which is now expanding and making it easier for ELLE to distribute their magazine. Avid fans of Jennie or fashion enthusiasts can be sure to be the buyers who dominate the sales of this magazine series.

What I like and what I don't like?

What I like about this magazine is the font used in the writing "ELLE", apart from that, I also like the luxurious theme used in the magazine. However, what I don't like about this magazine is the slightly darker color tones and the lack of detail in the star appeal makeup.

BIG ANALYSIS - 2

The theme for Vogue Japan is "BEAT GOES ON" which combines fashion and music. This magazine has been released in June 2021.

Media Language

In the image, Lisa is seen wearing a sporty street wear style and showing off her unique charm in a white crop top combined with a black jacket and baseball cap with the words Celine. In this issue of the magazine, Lisa is the main image (star appeal). The masthead that reads "VOGUE" has a font motif that looks like a soldier's clothing motif which is intended to tie it in to have a theme that is in line with the theme of this issue of the magazine. Besides that, the motif of the font is also in line with the concept of the dress worn by Lisa. The wardrobe wore by Lisa shows the masculinity side of women which makes women seems stronger and brave.

Representations

Judging from the concept of clothing known by the star appeal, it can be concluded that this magazine aims to show that women also have a 'masculine' side to themselves and they can also show that side through a free style of dress. the makeup style used by Lisa stands out on the eyes which makes her eyes appear more defined. Viewed from the perspective of social class, this magazine targets the middle to upper social class. Even though the appearance looks simple, it is clear that the price of these items is not cheap considering that Celine is one of the world's leading brands.

Audience

This magazine targets Lisa's fans, of course, and fashion style fans who look boyish and more 'frightening'. In addition, considering that Lisa is an ambassador for a world-renowned brand, namely Celine, it can be concluded that this magazine also targets fans of this fashion brand. That's why they arranged for Lisa to use one of Celine's products and feature it prominently on the cover of this magazine. In a nutshell, Celine promotes their products through Lisa who is an ambassador and through this Japanese edition of Vogue magazine.

Industry

This magazine is clearly aiming at a very broad marketing by taking advantage of Lisa's popularity and getting the privilege of Lisa's influence in the fashion world where she is known as one of the trendsetters. Especially with the influence of globalization which is now expanding and making it easier for VOGUE to distribute its magazines. Die-hard fans or fashion enthusiasts for Lisa are the buyers who dominate the sales of this magazine series. In addition, they may also specifically target Blackpink or Lisa fans in Japan considering that these idols have a very large fanbase in Japan.

What I like and what I don't like? I really like the color tone used in the words "VOGUE" and the fashion style used by Lisa because it really suits her aura and looks simpler and more comfortable. Meanwhile, the thing that I lack from this magazine is the lack of detail shown in the left third part of the cover of this magazine.

SMALL ANALYSIS - 3

What I like from this magazine?
I like the all blue theme used in this magazine series, from the wardrobe that the star appeal used and the background color. I also like the third left part in this magazine cover that illustrate what is inside the magazine or the content in the magazine. Furthermore, I also like the combination between red and white color for anything written in the cover.

What I don't like from this magazine?
I don't really like the barcode because it's too thick, I think it would be better to see by using a thinner barcode. although the clothes and background used in this magazine are good, the colors are almost the same so that it looks unified and a little misleading.

SMALL ANALYSIS - 4

What I like from this magazine?
I like the left third because it explains about the magazine content and what will be discuss inside. Furthermore, the cover line is also impressive ("Fearless, Fun, and Defying Hollywood's Expectations).

What I don't like from this magazine?
I don't like the typeface used for the coverlines because it seems very simple and not so attractive. Other than that,

SMALL ANALYSIS - 5

What I like from this magazine?
I really like the camera shot that is used to take the main image picture which is full shot. Other than that, the wardrobe that the star appeal use gives classy aura which makes him look "expensive". Furthermore, the main cover line shows that this magazine target is EXO's fans since this magazine mainly are talking about EXO.

What I don't like from this magazine?
I don't really like this cover because the left third part is empty which makes the audiences have no idea what does the magazine will be talking about. This magazine cover somehow looks empty because it does not contain much information which makes it looks boring. The red color used in this magazine does not match and makes the cover look a bit weird since the color is too bright. Furthermore, the lighting which is directly into the star appeal's face is too bright and focuses at one certain point.

SMALL ANALYSIS - 6

What I like from this magazine?
I really like this cover because the main image is handsome and the cover itself include a lot of information about what will the magazine be discussing about inside. Furthermore, I also like the wardrobe that the star appeal wear because it looks simple but elegant and I also like the bright background because it matches the main image and the concept of this magazine.

What I don't like from this magazine?
I notice that this magazine cover does not have any barcode same as some other magazine. Other than that, I think it would be better if the cover include skyline as well. The background used is also very ordinary and doesn't attract too much attention. I think it will be better especially if there is a bit of lighting that looks like shadows. Personally, I don't really like the typeface used for the main coverline because it doesn't match with the entire typeface used in this magazine cover. While the masthead and the other coverlines used formal font, "It's our 10th" used more informal typeface.
