Media Ecology - plan

Here are my notes/plan for media ecology question!

Explain what you think is the most significant change in the media recent years.

[Industry]
Techniques such as algorithmic content selection and user personalization can introduce risks and societal threats. The challenge of balancing these opportunities and benefits against their potential for negative impacts underscores the need for more research in responsible media technology. While AI has brought many benefits to the media industry, it has also raised several ethical concerns. One of the most significant concerns is the potential for bias in AI algorithms. AI algorithms are only as unbiased as the data they are trained on. If the training data contains biases, the algorithm will also be biased. For example, if an AI algorithm is trained on data that contains racial biases, it will also produce biased results. This could lead to discriminatory practices in the media industry, such as targeted advertisements based on race or gender. Another concern is the potential for AI to be used for deepfake content, which involves creating fake audio, video, or images that appear to be real. Deepfake content has the potential to undermine the credibility of the media and erode public trust in journalism.

- Representation of Gender and Identity (Stuart Hall, David Gauntlett): AI can be used to analyze media content for gender representation, potentially shedding light on biases, stereotypes, or underrepresentation of certain identities.

A key consequence of digitalization and the new business models that have become possible is that new competition has emerged for the media industry. There are, for example, new niche players who are able to target specific user demands more accurately, thus threatening to take over positions previously held by traditional media houses and their established editorial processes. For example, finn.no has become the main platform for classified ads in Norway, a sector previously covered primarily by traditional media; Twitter has become a major debate platform, making it possible to bypass the traditional media; Facebook appears to give us far more insight into peoples’ lives than the personals sections in the newspapers ever did; and Netflix, HBO, Twitch, TikTok, and YouTube challenge the positions owned by the commercial and public broadcasters in the culture and entertainment sectors. Large platforms, such as Facebook, aggregate content and services more efficiently than the media has been able to, capitalizing on both content curation by users and algorithms for predictive content personalization. Ultimately, these large platforms now act as powerful media distribution channels, while traditional media organizations have become content providers to these platforms, almost no different than just about anyone else with a smartphone.

[Audience]
One of the major areas in which AI impacts media and entertainment is content creation. AI algorithms can now analyze vast amounts of data to create content tailored to specific audiences. For example, Netflix uses machine learning algorithms to analyze viewing data and recommend content to users, while companies such as Jukin Media and Storyful use AI to analyze user-generated content and identify potential viral hits. AI is also being used to create new forms of content, such as virtual influencers and computer-generated actors. AI is also being used to enhance the consumer experience in entertainment. For example, chatbots are increasingly being used by entertainment companies to provide customer service and answer frequently asked questions, while voice recognition technology is being used to allow consumers to control their entertainment experience hands-free. AI-powered personal assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant are also being integrated into entertainment systems, allowing consumers to control their entertainment experience with voice commands.

- Reception theory (Stuart Hall): AI-driven recommendation algorithms analyze user data to suggest content based on past behavior. This shapes the media consumption habits of audiences, potentially influencing their tastes and preferences over time.

Mini Project (Lipsync video)

Before:
Our teacher has provided us to make a mini project which is a lip sync which we do in order to prepare for our final music video project. My expectation for this is so that we can act and do lip sync that looks professional. I feel excited and nervous at the same time because I'm worried that it wouldn't be as good as expected.

Reflection:
We got limited time for shoot and editing so it is not so good as what it was expected. However, we did the shoot from 3 different angles and all of us contributed in each lyrics. The mini project was fun and interesting whereas we can improve our teamwork and lip sync skill as well as our time management and we could explore more camera angles. My role in this mini project is contributing into the lip sync/acting. We had a problem in choosing where we will do the second part and how does the scene will look like because at first we were planning that Theo will do a solo dance at the school gym but then it turns out that the junior were doing the PE lesson there. So we decided to change the scene and we finalize that Theo will do the solo dance on top the school roof using low camera angle and long shot for that scene.

Postmodernism in SheHulk

Postmodernism is a mass production has saturated culture to such a degree that it is difficult to tell truth from representation (hyperreality). Some of the postmodernism which is included in the movie "SheHulk" are self-reflexivity, fragmented narrative, and loss of reality.

"SheHulk" is an action-adventure movie that was released in 2022 produced by Marvel Studios. This movie is considered as one of the movie that contains a lot of features of postmodernism, especially, self-reflexivity. Self-reflexivity itself is when the characters acknowledge that they are in film. This is shown through the scene when the character said "this is a mess, none of the storyline make any sense" before it changes to the Marvel menu and SheHulk breaks the wall and ge into the "real life world". This shows that the main characters recognize that she is just a movie character. Another postmodernism key features shown is fragmented narrative whereas the storyline of the movie are jumping back in some scene and it goes back into their actual scene (future). This is utilized to underline the subjective and arbitrary nature of truth and meaning as well as to reflect the complex and multifaceted aspect of reality. Furthermore, SheHulk also include so many loss of reality in the movie. For example, when SheHulk meets KEVIN in Marvel Studio when she move to the real world and when she had a conversation with KEVIN that is not human but instead, KEVIN is a robot that controls the whole movie. Another example is when DareDevil came to the real world and meet SheHulk.

IU's emotive performance, marked by sincere facial expressions and body language, establishes a genuine emotional connection with the lyrics. Symbolic elements, such as the floating bedroom and animated universe, serve as metaphors for memory and a yearning for connection. The video employs a semi-linear narrative, transitioning between real-world settings and dreamlike sequences, which complements the song's exploration of memory and longing. Ultimately, the "eight" music video beautifully captures a sense of nostalgia and reflection, resonating deeply with the song's message and providing a relatable and emotionally poignant viewing experience.

Cigaretts After Sex - "Apocalypse"

The music video for "Apocalypse" by Cigarettes After Sex utilizes a combination of mise-en-scene, camera techniques, sound design, and editing to create a dreamy and atmospheric mood that complements the band's ambient sound. The dimly lit interiors with warm, soft lighting, minimalist decor, and understated costumes contribute to a nostalgic and romantic atmosphere. The predominantly close-up and medium shots, along with slow and fluid camera movements, enhance intimacy and emotional intensity, while low-angle shots convey vulnerability and reverence. The music's ethereal melodies and soft, whispered vocals draw viewers into an immersive sonic experience, complemented by ambient sounds that enhance the dreamlike atmosphere. Deliberate editing with long takes, slow transitions, and occasional quick cuts maintains a contemplative pace, allowing emotions to unfold naturally and inviting viewers into a mesmerizing and introspective world. "Apocalypse" by Cigarettes After Sex captures me with its dreamy atmosphere and minimalist aesthetic, perfectly matching the song's emotional depth. The soft lighting and intimate camera shots create a cinematic experience that resonates with me. However, the slow pacing and lack of clear narrative can be challenging, feeling a bit repetitive or ambiguous. Overall, though, the video's atmospheric visuals and emotional storytelling align with my personal taste and enhance my connection to the music.

Weekly Progress & Plan

Here is the weekly progress of my project, I have also included the rough plan.

Reflection: Implementing a structured weekly plan and progress tracking in our music video project has proven instrumental in maintaining organization and efficiency. The plan has provided a clear roadmap, fostering better collaboration and accountability within the team. Regular progress check-ins enable us to identify and address challenges promptly, ensuring the project stays on course. The flexibility of this approach allows for timely adjustments, and celebrating weekly milestones boosts team morale. Overall, this method has been crucial in achieving our collective vision for the music video.
